This course is designed for Managers and practitioners with specific responsibility for Health and Safety in the workplace. The Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health is a professional qualification recognized internationally.

On successful completion of two written examinations and two workplace-based assignments, delegates can access Graduate Membership (Grad IOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)

Following the successful completion of a period of initial professional development (IPD), a graduate member may apply for Chartered status of IOSH (CMIOSH). Holders of the Diploma may also apply for full membership of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM)

Assessment information

The International Diploma comprises of three mandatory units each assessed individually via two written examinations and two workplace-based assignments.

Unit 1 – Principles of Health and Safety Management

Assessed by a 3-hour written examination in two parts. Part A comprises one compulsory, stimulus-based question relating to a fictitious workplace and questions centred on risk management. Part B comprises eight compulsory short-answer questions

Unit 2 – Safeguarding People’s Health in the Workplace

Assessed by a 2½-hour written examination and an assignment based on an occupational health hazard in the candidate’s workplace. The examination comprises ten compulsory short-answer questions

Unit 3 – Promoting a Positive Health and Safety Culture in the Workplace

Assessed by an assignment involving an assessment of the health and safety culture in the candidate’s workplace, preparation of a strategy for improving that culture and a business case to support the strategy.


Examinations

Unit 1 Examination

Results are reported as Distinction, Merit, Pass or Fail. In order to pass this unit, candidates must achieve the pass mark and score at least 40% in each of sections A and B.

Unit 2 Examination

Results are reported as Distinction, Merit, Pass, Fail (above threshold)* or Fail. The examination carries a weighting of 50% for the unit.

Examination and assignment marks are scaled and aggregated to give a total scaled mark for the unit as a whole. Unit grades are reported as Distinction, Merit, Pass or Fail.

Results are communicated to candidates eight weeks after the examination. Candidates may access their result online via our website from 12.00pm GMT on the result issue day by using their PIN number.

Assignment results are reported as Distinction, Merit, Pass or Fail and issued within eight weeks of submission. Candidates may access their result online via our website from 12.00pm GMT on the result issue day by using their PIN number.Unit 2 assignment carries a weighting of 50% for the unit. ​


Assignments

Candidates may choose when they complete and submit their assignments. An assessment assignment is required for both Unit 2 and Unit 3.

Upon receipt of an assignment booking, the British Safety Council will e-mail the candidate to confirm the booking and provide an electronic cover sheet which must be completed and submitted with the assignment.
